Do You Have Gum Disease? Our Panania Dentist Can Help
Gum disease in Panania and elsewhere in Australia is one of the leading causes of tooth loss and yet if it is treated in its early stages it can be easily reversed. If your gums bleed when you bite into crunchy food or brush your teeth, then this could be a sign that you have gum disease.
As a technology-led dental practice, we have a diagnostic tool known as PerioPOC: This is the only tool available that can detect periodontal (gum) disease in Panania, chairside within 20 mins. We are the only dentist in Australia to have this.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease as the advanced condition is known, is an infection of the soft tissues and bone that supports the teeth and holds them in place. Periodontal disease can cause tooth loss as well as difficulties with speaking and eating. The disease is also linked to heart disease and strokes. People who smoke, have a poor diet, diabetes, or suffer from blood pressure are particularly at risk of getting periodontal disease.
Picnic Point Dental is the ONLY accredited clinic in Australia using PerioPOC. Click here to find out how this innovative non-invasive tool can help detect periodontal disease.
What causes gum disease?
One of the main culprits of gum disease is plaque. This sticky clear film coats the surface of the teeth and is teeming with bacteria. Plaque hardens into tartar, irritates the gums, and causes inflammation. This, in turn, can lead to gum disease which, if ignored, can escalate into periodontal disease. Brushing alone cannot remove plaque effectively, which is why we recommend regular hygiene visits.
What Does Gum Treatment Entail?
Gum disease in its early stages can usually be reversed by undergoing a dental clean and improving your brushing and flossing technique.
Periodontal disease, on the other hand, may require several dental appointments to get it under control. Depending on its severity, treatment will commence with scaling and root planing. This cleans the surfaces of the teeth and the roots, which gum recession may have exposed.
Our dentist also uses lasers to treat periodontal disease. These help to prevent bleeding and swelling of the gums and may negate the need for gum disease surgery. Lasers are used to access infected pockets and to kill the diseased tissue and bacteria. This enables an ultrasonic cleaner to be used to remove the tartar.
Laser treatment also stimulates and regenerates soft tissue and helps to build bone.
