Orthodontics

At Picnic Point Dental, we believe that every smile makes a statement. You can be confident yours will say exactly what you want with straight even teeth, thanks to orthodontics.

What to expect at your first appointment?

Orthodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with helping customers fix misaligned teeth. Signs that an orthodontic treatment may help you include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Mouth breathing
  • Teeth grinding
  • Jaw pain or clicking
  • Dry mouth
  • Dark circles or patches under the eyes
  • Constant tiredness
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Snoring

Our orthodontics patients are typically young teenagers or adults who may be experiencing dental problems because of misaligned teeth. However, many patients come to us later in life too because they want the confidence that an attractive smile may bring.

How does it work?

Dental appliances are used to move teeth in the ideal position by placing very strong and continuous pressure on the teeth and jaws. This pressure helps the bone to change its shape, which then affects the movement of the teeth. These appliances work slowly and may be applied for a period of a year or more, depending on the requirements of the customer.

What are my options?

There are various types of appliances that fall broadly into either the fixed or removable category.
Fixed appliances include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and space maintainers, among others. As the name suggests, these are fixed to the teeth for a certain period of time. While some may find these unattractive and uncomfortable, these may be the most effective solution depending on the dental work required.

Removable appliances such as clear aligners (like Invisalign) are those that may be removed. In this regard, maintaining better oral hygiene may be easier as you can take them out while eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing. However, having the freedom to remove them when desired may also impede or slow down progress.
We take a “no surprises” approach and our trustworthy team will always give you clear explanations about your options before drawing up a treatment plan suited to your unique needs.

How often are check-ups required?

A regular check-up is usually required within two weeks to a month in order for us to examine the progress of the movement of your jaw bone and teeth. We then increase or decrease the amount of pressure of the braces or proceed to the next set of clear aligners. Our approachable team also welcomes this opportunity to answer any questions you may have because we want you to remain involved with your treatment and long-term dental outcomes.

What is Invisalign ® ?

Invisalign ® is a high-tech system which utilizes a sequence of removable clear aligners to reposition the teeth and straighten them. This invisible braces’ system has become extremely popular amongst teenagers and adults over the recent years. It truly is the clear alternative to braces.
The invisalign treatment aligners are very comfortable to wear and are soft against the sensitive gums and cheeks. Because they are removable, this makes eating, brushing and flossing much easier and more convenient.
At Picnic Point Dental Clinic, we are proud to be an accredited provider of Invisalign Sydney wide and can offer our patients this treatment.

HOW DOES INVISALIGN® WORK?

Using the latest CAD-CAM technology, a sequence of clear aligners is created, each slightly different from the previous one. The patient wears one aligner on the top teeth and one on the bottom teeth for approximately 2 weeks at a time. Each aligner will cause the teeth to move a small increment towards the right position. After 2 weeks, the patient moves on to wear the next set of aligners, and so on. By the end of the treatment, the teeth would’ve moved into its correct position resulting in a stunning new smile – all without any metal wire or metal brackets.

RANGE OF TREATMENT
Invisalign® can be used to correct a range of orthodontic problems ranging from mild crowding to moderate crowding and protrusion. Consult your Dentist to see if Invisalign® is suitable for you.

TREATMENT LENGTH
Invisalign® treatment varies based on every individual case and the goals we are trying to achieve. It usually goes for approximately 9-15 months, about 18-30 aligners.

TREATMENT STEPS

  1. Initial Consultation – here we will assess the condition, discuss your options and listen to your needs
  2. Impressions – Accurate Impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to the Invisalign® Lab where your custom fitted clear aligners are made.
  3. Fitting – The Dentist will fit the first set of aligners onto your teeth and start the teeth straightening process.
  4. Review Appointments – You would return to the clinic usually once every 6-8 weeks for a treatment progress check. This continues until your teeth are straight. Once treatment is complete a Retainer is fitted to maintain the result.
